ALONG CHICO CREEK: Blue
Mitchell rides out of Colorado,
after burying a good friend in
a shallow grave. Traveling
aimlessly, Blue encounters an
outrageous mansion in the
high-grass New Mexico plains.
Fleeing the monster house, he
hears gunshots and then finds
the hunter's kill; a
fancy-dressed gentleman in a
handsome buckboard who's
been shot in the back. Blue
follows the buckboard team to
their home ranch, where he
encounters the grieving
widow, a sullen cook, the
careless foreman and a few
hands, and eventually the
local law. The wife of the
mansion's builder is friendly
with the new widow and her
attempts at consolation turns
into an ugly farce.
FAST HORSES: Having decided to head
north to escape, Blue rides into being
charged as a horse-thief. He discovers a
loose stallion, a pregnant mare, and her
young colt. Before Blue can return the
horses, the Army 'captures' him and
takes him to Fort Robinson to face
charges.
Blue escapes the Army confinement to
help the wild mare in foaling; she breaks
his arm in return. Wounded and unwilling
to surrender to the soldiers hunting him,
Blue find safety at the Post Commander's
house.
Life changes dramatically - the wife
nurses Blue, her son assists Blue in his
recovery, and the wife offers Blue
intimate affection. He chooses to leave
the next morning, afraid of learning to
love.
Five years later Blue returns with a band
of Army remounts. The wife is gone, the
commander retired, and the son is a new
Lieutenant from West Point. A three-way
horse race develops, and the results of
the race changes Blue's life irrevocably.
