Individual: A DEBT OWED and THE
SUM OF MUCH - contemporary
Heroes appear unexpectedly - A
DEBT OWED chronicles the efforts
of a rebel to preserve a band of
starving wild mares. Del Winter
owns a canyon and a cabin where
he lived briefly with two brothers
and their grandfather. Del's
efforts to save the mares draw
him into old conflicts; with a
horse-hunter, Park Service
employees, and a brother who
wants what he can't have. A
young woman from a local
environmental group surprises
herself and Del by becoming
involved in his efforts to save the
mares.
With a small group of friends, Del
battles the politics and old
enemies as he tries to reclaim
the wild horses.
THE SUM OF MUCH details a
different war as a returning
soldier's family name isolates
him. Harlan Ora Judkins wishes
to disappear; instead he
attends a local college and
works for old friends. Uncertain
and inarticulate, Ora finds his
voice when local officials
decide to drain what they see
as an unimportant swamp to
create a 'gentrified' tourist
park.
These stories are unique in
situations and details even as
they share the struggle of one
person standing up to outside
pressure which, in their eyes,
damages the world. They are
indeed heroes and they appear
in our lives most often without
acknowledgement or thanks.
