FIVE CENT RETURN - contemporary
The story of a man with no direction, who
rescues a horse from a 'killer' auction in
Pennsylvania. Joe Evans knows where
the horse belongs, as the brand on the
animal belongs to Joe's grandfather, who
ranches in Nebraska. The horse is thin
and ill-tempered, so Joe decides to walk
cross-country with Ike. Cars, trucks,
rivers and bridges are obstacles to be
overcome, but the most dangerous
problem they encounter is people. Some
want to save Joe, some instinctively hate
him.
When Joe saves a woman's life and
almost loses his own, he learns to live
with his past and to receive compassion.
In return, he finds compassion within
himself and the beginnings of
understanding love.
A chance encounter in a 'booktown'
opens Joe to the incredible possibilities
of romance. Still he continues his
journey, determined to turn Ike loose on
the ranch. He struggles with the idea of
family; is his grandfather still alive and
will his half-brothers forgive him for how
he saved their lives as children fifteen
years ago.
Throughout the long journey, the horse
has learned to accept being ridden, and
Joe slowly finds a core of decency left in
him despite the harsh years.
